        About Vile Style Jams

Vile Style Jams are organized by the Second To None Crew. The first one was in 1987 and in 2009 Second To None decided to do a jam and so decided to use the name and flyer artwork from the 1987 jam. The Vile Style 2 Jam was a success, and Second To None received good feedback about the jam and requests for more jams.

A search was on for a venue, although the venue for the 2nd jam was very good, it was felt that it would be good only in the summer as a large part of the area is outside, it also did not have a sound system so that had to be organized as well. A club was found that was just right, it was in the town centre, a converted church with a wooden floor and a decent sound system. The club has been converted to a high standard, not the usual dingy venues that b-boy events end up in. Back in the 80’s there was a breaking club on every Saturday afternoon called Madisons, the club has long closed down but back then it was Bournemouth’s version of Spats in London and breakers would come down from all over the place to battle or just throw-down. Keeping in the tradition of the Saturday afternoon session it was decided to do the Vile Style Jam on Saturday afternoons as well but only once a month to see how it goes, every week would seem too much at this stage.

The format for the jam would be circle throw-down, it has been felt that there are not enough of these type of jams in the U.K., the music is non-stop and anyone can go on the floor and bust a move unlike b-boy competitions where you have to register to enter and with the right amount of crew members where you will have to dance to the schedule dictated by the contest. Second To None have felt that the scene needs more circle jams, in the 80’s most b-boy jams were like this, you can take your time to warm up and do your best stuff when you feel right and inspired, rather when you have to.

Every 4-6 months a b-boy competition will take place and profits from the monthly jam would go towards prize money.

As the organizers of the Vile Style Jams are also breakers themselves (Second To None have been breaking since 1984) they know how a b-boy jam should be, the floor has to be right and have enough space. This is the most important element, too often Second To None have attended jams where there floor is no good or there is no room or the only place to dance is a tiny stage where you can’t do anything. The music has to be right too, to inspire the b-boy and b-girls, sometimes at jams the music is stop-start-stop-start with an MC shouting all the time. Second To None feel this kills the atmosphere for breaking, if a battle is going on the last thing you want is the music to stop while the MC bigs up all his mates.

At the Vile Style circle jam the music will be non stop with no MC shouting, wicked tunes that you would not hear at the average jam.
